Perio dictation: the phrases that work
The sections, the rhythm, the three ways to name a site, and the corrections that work no matter where the cursor happens to be.
You do not have to learn a syntax. Mesio was built around how hygienists already call out a chart. But a handful of habits make the difference between a chart that needs no correcting and one that needs a little, so they are worth ten minutes.
Work the sections in order
Mesio uses the order to understand what it is hearing. A bare “two” means a different thing in recession than it does in probing.

One tooth per breath
The single most useful habit. Say the three numbers together and pause before the next tooth. Mesio listens in the gaps, and a clean gap between teeth is what keeps a whole quadrant aligned.
You do not need to fill the silences. Talking to the patient between teeth is fine and is ignored.
Naming a site, three ways
All of these reach the same place, and Mesio does not care which you use or how your recognizer spells it.
- The whole tooth. bleeding on 6 marks all six surfaces.
- One surface. bleeding on 6 lingual marks that side's three sites.
- One site. bleeding on 6 distolingual, or “disto lingual”, or “distal lingual”, or “DL”.
Corrections name their target
Every correction says what it is fixing, so none of them depend on where the cursor is. You can fix a tooth from three teeth later without going back.
- no, tooth 14 is three, two, three — replaces that tooth.
- no, 15 distal is five — replaces one site.
- scratch that — undoes the last thing.
- no bleeding on 15 — clears a mark.
- tooth 15 is not missing — puts a tooth back.
Ask it what it has
You do not have to look at the screen to check a tooth.
what do you have for 18 buccal? can you read 25 buccal to me where am I?
It reads the numbers back out loud, so you can keep the probe where it is.
If it asks you to repeat a tooth, say got it and read that tooth again. A plain “ok” will not clear it, on purpose — so an absent-minded “okay” cannot hand the next tooth's depths to the wrong one.
