Twenty minutes before your first patient
Do this at the chair, on the microphone you will really use, and not on the morning of your first perio patient.
Voice charting is a habit, and habits are not learned under pressure. There is a practice chart that exists purely so the first time you dictate perio is not also the first time a patient is in front of you.
It takes about four minutes. Do it in the operatory you chart from, on the microphone you will really use.
The microphone gets tuned first
Before any charting, you read a short sheet with no chart on screen. Mesio listens to how your voice sits in that room and tunes how it decides you have started and stopped speaking.
That step matters more than it sounds. Most of what people experience as mishearing is really the microphone clipping the start of a word or running two calls together. Tuning it in the actual room with the actual hardware removes a whole category of problem before you meet it.
Watch, then do
First a completed session replays into a real chart so you can see the rhythm, the order and the phrasing. Then you read a chart aloud yourself, as if it were a mouth.
The chart you read from is on screen, and as you go, Mesio shows what it expected against what it heard. You can see a disagreement the moment it happens rather than discovering it at the end.
A scorecard, and what it learned about you
At the end you get a real score, where it struggled, and the specific things it noticed about your speech. If you say a word in a way Mesio consistently mishears, it says so and offers to remember your version.
It proposes, it never silently adjusts. Four minutes of reading is a small sample, and quietly reshaping itself around a small sample is how these systems get worse over time. Every suggestion shows its evidence, and you accept it or you do not.
Nothing here touches a visit
The practice chart is not a patient. Nothing saves, no record opens, and the chart you read from is made up. You can do it as many times as you like, and you should do it again for every new operatory or microphone.
Do it before, not during
There is a coach inside the charting dialog that will walk you through it live, and it is a good safety net. It is a worse teacher than four quiet minutes with nobody waiting on you.
